Memorial Day of Famines` Victims in Ukraine

24.11.2012 - 21.11.2012

On November 24th, people in Ukraine and in the world commemorate the Famines’ Victims in Ukraine of 1921-1923, 1932-1933 and 1946-1947. The events are held in all regions of Ukraine and in 32 countries of the world. The 1932-1933 Famine was the worst among other famines as it was the genocide against the Ukrainian people. This year marks the 79th anniversary of the unimaginable tragedy and the public campaign aims primarily to talk about those who saved their compatriots from terrible death. “When hunger killed people, sharing bread was a heroic deed. The fate of those people reminds us that heroism is always possible”, says Volodymyr Viatrovych, a historian and member of the Public Committee.
There will be a nationwide moment of silence at 4 pm. Within the framework of the “Light a Candle of Memory” national action, millions of Ukrainians will light candles in their windows and bring them to the places of remembrance for the victims.
